Michigan Lawyer Discusses Lawsuits For Meningitis From Receiving Steroid Injection

Posted on Oct 17, 2012

The recent outbreak of meningitis of patients infected by steroid injections has caused a significant number of injuries and deaths throughout the United States. Our Michigan medical malpractice attorneys are actively investigating the legal rights of patients who have been injured or died due to the recent and ongoing meningitis outbreak due to steroid injections.

According to NBC News, nearly 14,000 patients have been given this potentially tainted injection of pain medicine. The injections were shipped to 23 different states, including the State of Michigan. Of the 14,000 people at risk of infection, medical practitioners are trying to reach about 2,000 patients to warn them to get tested immediately.

Federal and State health authorities have confirmed that since people that began coming to emergency rooms in the last month in the State of Tennessee, there have been 14 meningitis deaths.

In fact, the first lawsuit was filed in a Minnesota federal court on Thursday, October 11, 2012, against New England Compounding Center of Massachusetts, for a woman who said she was given a steroid injection for back pain and has experienced symptoms related to meningitis.  Currently, the woman is awaiting the results of her tests.

In addition, the number of people who contracted meningitis caused by steroid injections has also increased dramatically this week, reaching 169 infected patients on Thursday. This number was an increase of 32 from the day before.

All infected patients received injection with preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate prepared by New England Compounding Center (NECC), located in Framingham, MA. The lots of medication that were used on infected patients have been recalled. The lots are:

  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #[email protected], BUD 11/17/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #[email protected], BUD 12/26/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #[email protected], BUD 2/6/2013

Although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday it is working on containing the meningitis outbreak, eleven out of the 23 states in which the medication was shipped to have reported cases of meningitis, including deaths in six states.

In addition, the CDC is concerned that the injection may not be limited to epidural injections, but injections in the joints, such as a knee or ankle, as well as it was recently disclosed that a Michigan patient did receive an injection in the ankle and has developed an infection.

“Our medical malpractice attorneys in Michigan are actively investigating the legal rights of patients who have been injured or died due to the meningitis outbreak due to epidural steroid injections. If a family member died due to the meningitis from a steroid injection, the surviving family members may be able to file a Wrongful Death Lawsuit or make a claim under the National Vaccine Injury Protection Act.

To learn more about your legal right, any individual who believes they have been a victim of this outbreak should contact an experienced medical malpractice attorney immediately to discuss their case,” says Firm Partner and Trial Attorney, Daniel Buckfire.
