Riding Without A Helmet Law Shows Increase In Fatalities & Injuries

Riding with or without a helmet has always been a hot topic among drivers. After Governor Rick Snyder changed the helmet law in April of 2012 allowing motorcyclists over the age of 21 to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, statistics show that the amount of injuries and deaths have increased substantially. In fact, in a recent report done by the office of Highway Safety Planning fatality rate was nearly three times higher for those who did not wear helmets last year than those who did.

It was also found that motorcycle fatalities were up 18 percent last year, from 109 in 2011 to 129 in 2012.  Common injuries in motorcycle accidents include: traumatic brain injury, closed head injury, spinal cord injury, broken bones, shoulder injuries, knee injuries, scarring and disfigurement, road rash, burn injuries, and amputation injury.

Research has also shown that 74 percent of motorcyclists wear a helmet compared to 98 percent of motorcyclists in previous years. Rider skill and experience as well as wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle has been proven to reduce the risk of injury by 50 percent.

When a motorcyclist does not wear a helmet the chance of the sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is higher if involved in an accident. Due to rising medical costs, this can become quite a stress factor in a victim and their family’s life. It has been approximated that treating a TBI injury can cost a victim nearly $1 million in their lifetime.

Motorcycle safely is a major concern for motorcycle riders in the state of Michigan. Our bike accident lawyers suggest that more strict licensing, motorcycle safety programs and driver awareness can help combat the increase in fatalities and injuries. It is important for a motorcyclist to familiarize themselves with motorcycle accident statistics so they are knowledgeable about the potential dangers that exist.
