Michigan Medical Malpractice Case Examples

The term “medical malpractice” is frequently heard when a patient or a loved one receives substandard medical care that causes injury, harm, or death to the patient.  The fact is that most medical malpractice victims are never compensated for injuries suffered due to medical errors because they do not know they are victims of medical negligence.

Examples Medical Malpractice Cases

Medical malpractice, also known as medical negligence, is the term used to describe a wrong committed by a doctor or other medical professional who caused the bodily harm. These are often referred to as “medical errors” and “medical mistakes.” Many times, a doctor or hospital fails to use appropriate treatment methods or neglects the patient. The results of this inadequate and inappropriate care can cause significant permanent injuries and even wrongful death.

Some examples of medical malpractice cases filed by our Michigan medical malpractice attorneys include:

• Misdiagnosis of a stroke in a hospital emergency room.  The patient was improperly discharged without a proper medical work-up and suffered significant injuries as a result of this medical negligence.

• Anesthesia error in which the patient was intubated in the esophagus instead of the trachea and was deprived oxygen during a surgery.  She suffered an anoxic brain injury and later died.

• Surgery mistake in which the surgeon clipped the bile duct during a gallbladder surgery but failed to recognize the error during the surgery.  The patient suffered significant injuries due to this medical error.

• Failure to diagnose pediatric hip dysplasia in an infant which resulted in the child requiring major hip surgery instead of using a harness or brace which most likely would have resolved the condition without major surgery.

• Discharging a patient with signs and symptoms of a post-operative leak after bariatric weight loss surgery.  The patient went home and later died from sepsis caused by the undiagnosed leak.

• Emergency room malpractice for failing to diagnose a pulmonary embolism in a patient who presented with shortness of breath, chest pain, and other symptoms after fracturing several ribs.  The patient later died from the failure to diagnose pulmonary embolism.
