Who Do I Sue for a Dog Attack in Lansing?

Under Michigan law, a dog attack victim has the legal right to compensation.

The owner or keeper of the dog is strictly liable to the victim for the injuries resulting from the bite.  Children are frequent victims of these attacks and suffer permanent scars, often on the face.

In addition to state liability laws, Lansing has its own dog bite ordinance. According to Ordinance No. 1050, 6-10-02, “No dog owner shall permit his or her dog to run at large within the City. A dog running at large in violation of this chapter at least twice within any continuous six-month period of time is hereby deemed to be a nuisance.”

Furthermore, “A dog owner is required to confine or secure his or her dog within the limits of the owner’s premises, except when the dog is securely tethered on a leash and under the control of a person holding the leash who is capable of restraining the dog at all times.”

In 2019, Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter serviced 459 calls in reference to animal bite cases. Stray animals — cats and dogs — accounted for only 63 of the 459 bite calls. Nearly 400 bite calls came from animals where the owner was known.

The bar chart below shows the total number of calls serviced by Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter between 2014-2019. The service calls logged in 2019 are only dated through Dec. 2.

What is the Time Deadline for Lansing Personal Injury Cases?

The statute of limitations to sue a person or entity in Michigan is based upon the type of case.  Car accident cases have a three-year deadline filing a lawsuit.

Cases involving medical malpractice and nursing home neglect have a two-year time limit for filing a lawsuit.

There are some exceptions to these general rules. These include cases for wrongful death, matters involving injuries to a minor, and lawsuits based upon insurance contracts and no-fault laws.

It is important to call our attorneys immediately to determine if you have time left to file your case. If you miss the deadline,  your case will be lost forever.
