Get Help for a Grand Rapids Dog Bite Lawyer

Under Michigan law, a person bitten by a dog can sue for compensation. The dog owner or keeper is legally liable to the victim for the injuries resulting from the bite.

Child victims often suffer permanent scars, often on the face, that required medical treatment and even plastic surgery.

In Kent County, more than 1,000 dog bites are reported and investigated every year, according to data compiled by Kent County Animal Shelter.

In 1998, there were 1168 dog bite investigations in Kent County. Over 40% of dog bite victims locally are age 14 and under, mirroring national trends.

In addition, Animal Shelter records show that nearly 70% of bites in Kent County in 2018 were from dogs that had not been neutered.

Additionally, law enforcement officers called to the scene of animal bite incidents, or medical personnel who may treat an animal bite victim, are required by law to report bites to the Kent County Animal Shelter.

Animal Control Officers investigating an animal bite will determine the circumstances surrounding the bite, and what action should be taken regarding the biting animal.

According to Kent County Administration, biting animals are generally quarantined in their home or at the Kent County Animal Shelter kennels for a minimum of 10 days after they have bitten someone. Our dog bite lawyers have won major settlements for attack victims. Some examples include:

  • $475,000 settlement for a Michigan woman attacked by a neighbor’s dog that escaped from the yard.
  • $320,000 settlement for a West Michigan resident attacked by a dog while house-sitting for a relative.
  • $295,000 settlement for a boy who suffered a fractured skull and facial scars from a vicious dog attack.

We will help you get compensated for injuries suffered in a canine attack.

Rules & Regulations for Dog Ownership in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids Charter Township has adopted a dog bite ordinance.

According to the Article V of the ordinance, referred to as The Animal Control Ordinance of Grand Rapids Charter Township, a vicious animal “shall at all times when not securely confined be securely muzzled and led by a leash. Any animal shall be deemed vicious which has bitten a person or domestic animal without molestation, or, which by its actions, gives indications that it is liable to bite any person or domestic animal without molestation.”

Furthermore, Grand Rapids Charter Township officials may “secure a summons against the owner of said animal commanding him to appear and show cause why said animal should not be ordered to be confined or destroyed. Upon such hearing, the District Court shall proceed to determine whether it shows vicious habits or molests passers-by when lawfully on the public highway, and if the Court shall so find, it shall forthwith either order said animal confined to the premises of the owner or shall order the Director of Animal Control to cause said animal to be destroyed or shall enter such other order relative to the care of such animal as the Court shall determine to be appropriate.”

Is There a Time Limit for Grand Rapids Personal Injury Cases?

There are strict time deadlines for filing injury, accident, and medical negligence cases in Michigan.

Most accident cases have a three-year deadline for filing a lawsuit. Cases involving medical malpractice and nursing home neglect have a two-year time limit for filing a lawsuit.

For sexual assaults, the law provides even a longer time to file your case.

There are only a few exceptions to these general rules. These include cases for wrongful death, cases involving injuries to a minor, and lawsuits based upon insurance contracts and no-fault laws.

You should call our attorneys immediately to determine if you have time left to file your case. If you miss the deadline, your case will be lost forever.
