Distracted driving is a huge threat to Michigan drivers. In fact, a recent report by MLive.com revealed that more than 9,000 car accidents in Michigan involved cell phone use in the past decade, while more than 34,000 other auto accidents involved different forms of distracted driving.
Other forms of distracted driving include eating, talking to passengers, drinking, adjusting the radio, having pets, children, or objects move around in the car.
Michigan Distracted Driving Car Accident Facts
Reporters across Michigan reviewed hundreds of accident reports, interviewed accident victims of distracted driving crashes, and analyzed a decade of crash records obtained from the Michigan State Police’s Traffic Crash Reporting Section to findings. These facts include:
- • Young drivers on cell phones are far more likely to be involved in car accidents than older drives are. Half were in there 20’s or younger; eighteen-year-olds were the worst.
- • Older drivers are not blameless. Almost one-third of those using a cellphone at the time of the crash were in their 30s and 40s. The oldest was 97.
- • Many crashes - even fatal ones - are not counted because phone use is not discovered until later. And the crashes appear to be getting worse, with drivers never seeing the object in their path. Or seeing it too late.
In addition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that in 2010, there were an estimated 3,092 deaths in auto accidents involving a wide range of driver distractions. That number equals to nearly one in 10 traffic deaths from all causes.
