Study: Michigan Roads Still Need $3.3 Billion to be Fixed

PotholeMichigan's roads and bridges are breaking down faster than the road funding increase signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2015 can fix them, according to a study released Tuesday by an interest group reported by The Grand Rapids Press.

About $3.3 billion worth of transportation projects in Michigan still lack funding, according to findings by TRIP, a Washington-based research firm funded by parties with a stake in road infrastructure projects.

The bulk of those projects are in the Detroit metro area - about $2 billion worth. Lansing has $483 million of unfunded road and bridge projects, and the Grand Rapids area has unfunded needs of about $234 million.

Though the Republican-backed road funding fix is helping the state fix some roads and bridges, the number of lane miles in poor condition is expected to increase rapidly in the next five years, TRIP found.

Twenty percent of Michigan's roads were in poor condition in 2016 - a figure that's anticipated to almost reach 50 percent by 2020.

TRIP is a nonprofit and has been traveling across the country releasing data on the transportation infrastructure needs of each state.
