June 3, 2015 – Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. is pleased to announce Ms. Hanna Hughes as the recipient of the law firm’s 2015 Disability Scholarship Program! She was selected from over two hundred and fifty qualified applicants from throughout the United States. Ms. Hughes will receive $1,000.00 towards her tuition.

Hanna Hughes

Ms. Hughes is pursuing her education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. She has completed two years of her undergraduate education and enters her senior year this fall with a double major in Psychology and Communications. Hanna aspires to become a clinical psychologist after she graduates from the university.

In April 2010, Hanna was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in her right hip. For the next ten weeks, Hanna began rigorous chemotherapy treatment in an attempt to reduce the size of the tumor. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful and doctors informed her that her right leg would have to be amputated. In June 2010, Hanna underwent a twenty-one hour surgery to remove her right leg, right hip, and a portion of her pelvis was removed. Following the surgery, she continued to receive chemotherapy treatments for another seventeen weeks until the cancer was fully removed.

The amount of care and support she experienced throughout her battle with cancer has inspired her to dedicate her career to helping others deal with life-altering diagnoses. Her experience and passion to help others will make Hanna a great asset to her community and the psychology profession.

“Choosing a winner this year was incredibly difficult because there were so many deserving candidates, but Hannah really stood out to the entire scholarship selection committee,” says Partner and Attorney Lawrence J. Buckfire.   “Her story of perseverance is truly inspiring.  We are proud to provide financial help to incredible students, like Hanna, so that they may pursue their dreams,” says Mr.  Buckfire.

Students who applied for the Disability Scholarship Program were encouraged to share stories of a disability that has affected their life. Disabilities include, but are not limited to, physical disabilities, medical conditions, mental and psychiatric conditions, speech and language, learning disabilities, and behavioral conditions.  Applicants submitted an essay describing their disability and how it has impacted their life.
