Our Michigan medical negligence lawyers recently filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a Wayne County hospital. The lawsuit involves a patient who presented to the emergency department for a sports related injury. He was heavily sedated and then taken to the radiology department for x-rays to be taken. The radiology technician had him sit on a backless, moveable doctor’s stool while he was waiting for his x-ray. The patient who was dizzy and heavily medicated and was left alone in the room. He fell off of the stool and struck his head on the floor.
Due to the fall, the client suffered a significant injury to the head. Photographs taken in the hospital after the incident demonstrate the severity of the impact caused by the fall. He suffered a large laceration, a concussion, and a traumatic brain injury.
According to the Center for Disease Control data on traumatic brain injuries (http://www.cdc.gov/Features/dsTBI_BrainInjury/ ) falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the United States. Over 35% of all brain injuries are caused by falls. In particularly, falls result in 523,043 TBI-related emergency department visits and 62,334 hospitalizations.
