Our Michigan dog bite lawyer won a jury verdict in a Michigan dog bite lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a boy who was bitten in his face by a neighbor’s dog when he was three years. The boy was delivering Christmas cookies to his neighbor when he was attacked at the home. He suffered a significant scar on the side of his face and was treated at the local emergency department. He was then taken to a plastic surgeon in Chicago for further treatment.
The lawsuit was filed in the Cass County Circuit Court. The suit sought damages for the boy, now age 10, for his past damages and future damages. Past damages were for pain and suffering and the disfiguring scar on his face for the seven preceding years. For future damages, claims were made for the disfigurement that he would have for the rest of his life. Additionally, claims were made for in excess of $10,000.00 for the future expense of plastic surgery to revise the scar.
The jury awarded a total of $90,000.00 to our injured client. This included the expense for the future plastic surgery procedures. The homeowner’s insurance company for the dog owner offered $50,000.00 to settle the case before the trial, but this was rejected as too low to compensate the boy for his severe injuries. The award was $40,000 higher than the insurance company settlement offer.
