The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a $656,508 contract with SWT Excavating Inc. and a $500,000 Foundation for Excellence appropriation to replace lead service lines in Kalamazoo on Monday, according to the Kalamazoo Gazette.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has recommended that all existing lead service lines be replaced. Kalamazoo's Department of Public Services is tackling the problem head on, coordinating replacements throughout the city's water system with scheduled road and infrastructure projects.
The contract with Kalamazoo County-based SWT Excavating will replace 177 lead service lines along streets undergoing reconstruction this year. Most of the lines hook up to homes in the Vine and Edison neighborhoods, with some replacements scheduled at homes in the Westnedge Hill, South Westnedge and Winchell neighborhoods.
The city replaced 120 lead service lines in 2016, however, at least 2,917 still remained by the end of the year. Kalamazoo had historically averaged the removal of around 100 lead pipes per year.
Last month, the City Commission approved a $848,000 contract to replace more than 200 lead pipes delivering water to residents in Kalamazoo Township.
Elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.
