Allergan, the manufacturer of Taytulla, announced Tuesday it was issuing a nationwide recall, totaling nearly 170,000 birth control packs, due to the fact that four placebo capsules were placed out of order in sample packs sent to doctor offices nationwide.
A physician reportedly informed Allergan of the error in the first four days of a 28-count sample pack.
The pack has 24 pink capsules with "WC" on them to be taken for 24 days, then four maroon capsules (the placebo caps) to be taken for the next four days, according to the Miami Herald.
As a result of this packaging error, oral contraceptive capsules, that are taken out of sequence, may place the user at risk for contraceptive failure and unplanned pregnancy.
The reversing of the order may not be apparent to new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order, Allergan reports within their press release.
According to the U.S. Federal Drug Administration, Allergan will notify affected customers with a recall letter, and says it is "arranging for return of all recalled sample" packs with an expiration of May 2019, and lot code of 5620706.
