SOUTHFIELD (October 8, 2019) – Attorneys from Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C., a Michigan-based personal injury law firm, are excited to award their 2019 Medical School Diversity Scholarship to Oakland University third-year medical student Kylee Kus.

The annual scholarship award was established in 2013 as part of the law firm’s initiative to recognize outstanding medical school students who are committed to promoting diversity in their communities.

Kus is currently enrolled at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Auburn Hills, Mich., studying dermatology with a focus on conditions that are more prevalent in people of color. Kus said she found her passion for studying dermatology while working as a medical assistant prior to medical school.

Throughout her studies, Kus said she has “been gifted with exceptional mentors that have inspired [her] to continuously refine [her] career goals.” All of which has led her to her current path of researching skin diseases and disorders and their potential correlation to race. Kus said she hopes her research will help herself and others provide proper care to diverse patient populations.

Kus included a synopsis of her research within her essay, explaining her research suggested that “Hepatitis B is disproportionately prevalent among the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) community and poses a significant health concern. While APIA individuals comprise less than 5% of the American population, they represent more than 50% of Americans living with chronic hepatitis B. Not only is the prevalence higher, the risk of developing liver cancer and overall mortality is higher as well.”

Kus’ research has also been recognized by the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association at its national conference about Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
