According to a recent study released by the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition (MDCC), in Michigan, in 2011, there were 53,592 car-deer accidents, down from 55,867 crashes in 2010. In 2011, eight people were killed in vehicle-deer crashes and another 1,464 suffered serious injury. The months of October and November are the two highest months for car-deer accidents. The five counties where these types of accidents occurred most, in 2011, include Kent County (1,750), Oakland County (1,736), Jackson County (1,536), Calhoun County (1,429), and Montcalm County (1,340).
In addition, it was found that car-deer accidents are costly. In Michigan, vehicle-deer crashes cost at least $130 million per year; the average insurance claim is about $2,100 in damage, usually to the front of the vehicle, which often leaves it undriveable.
A person who hits a deer while driving in Michigan or is injured in a car accident with a deer can file a claim for Michigan no-fault insurance benefits. These include claims for payment of medical bills, lost wages, household services, and attendant care services.
Buckfire & Buckfire Michigan auto accident attorneys are currently representing several individuals injured in a deer accident.
“There are strict time limitations when filing insurance claims in Michigan after a car accident so it is important that you understand your legal rights and contact an experienced Michigan car accident and no-fault attorney as soon as possible after your deer accident,” says Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Firm Partner and Trial Attorney, Daniel Buckfire.
When a crash with a deer is unavoidable the MDCC recommends the driver to stay calm, do not swerve, brake firmly, hold onto the steering wheel with both hands, come to a controlled stop, and steer your vehicle well off the roadway.
