The Muskegon County Health Deaprtment is offering free tests on December 19, 2008 to check for lead paint on children's toys. The recent recalls of toys and children's products has caused great concern to parents and doctors in recent months.
This offer is an excellent idea and a perfect example of proactive intervention to prevent child lead poisoning. Most inspections and testing is done only after a child has been poisoned. Although ingesting lead from detriorated paint in older homes is the primary source of lead poisoning, the recent news about toys from China has raised additional concerns and has further publicized the problems caused to children from lead poisoning.
