The Michigan House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban sending text messages from cell phones while driving, except to report a traffic accident, road hazard, crime, or medical emergency. The vote was 62-38 in favor of the bill. The bill would not affect use of GPS devices. The bill now goes to the state Senate for consideration. A majority of the Senate must pass the bill and it must be signed into law by the Governor before it becomes law.
The House also considered, but rejected, a separate bill that would have banned talking on handheld cell phones while driving.
