Westland Dog Bite Laws

In Westland, there are laws that apply to dog owners. These can be found in the Westland City Ordinances. Specifically, they are as follows:

Sec. 18-13. Dog or animal quarantine.

(a) Whenever a dog or other warm-blooded animal has bitten a person, the dog or other warm-blooded animal shall be quarantined for a period of ten days. If the owner has proof of rabies vaccination, the animal may be quarantined on the premises. If there is no proof of vaccination, the animal must be quarantined at the animal shelter. If confined in the pound during quarantine, the owner shall be charged a special handling fee as required by the animal shelter.
(b) The mayor shall, at any time he considers it advisable for the public health and safety, have the authority to effect a warm-blooded animal quarantine by causing a notice entitled "Notice of Animal Quarantine" to be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the city and posted on the owners' premises providing for a period of time during which all warm-blooded animals within the city shall be confined upon the property of the owner. During such period, it shall be unlawful for the owner of any warm-blooded animal to permit such animal to cross the property line of the owner. The owners of all such animals shall be charged with the responsibility of enforcing such confinement. The quarantine shall take effect 24 hours after publication and continue during the time prescribed in such publication.

Sec. 18-44. Confinement or restraint.

The owner of a dangerous or vicious dog shall not suffer or permit such dog to be unconfined, either on or outside the premises of the owner, unless such dog is securely restrained, leashed and muzzled.
