When it is time to go on vacation or to move, many people turn to car and truck rental companies like U-Haul for assistance. By renting a car, people can be mobile while they are away from home for work or vacation. And by renting a truck, people can often make moving into a much easier ordeal.
All car and truck rental companies offer their customers the option of buying insurance on the vehicle. While many people view this as unnecessary, it can be very important if you are ever involved in a car accident or a truck accident in the rented vehicle.
In one recent court case, two people went to rent a car, but they listed only one of their names on the insurance policy. Then the person who was not listed on the policy was injured in a car accident that took place while he was driving. The insurance company denied the injured truck driver's claim because he was not listed on the insurance policy that covered the rented vehicle. The insurance company went to court over this issue and then appealed it.
Although the insurance company ultimately lost the appeal, they were able to delay paying out benefits to the injured driver for more than a year. The insurance company also spent considerable time and money litigating the question of whether there was coverage. Insurance companies are always quick to try to use things like not listing a person's name on the policy as a reason to deny coverage. If they win even once at court, they can use that decision as authority for denying dozens or even hundreds of similar insurance claims.
