Law School, Medical School and Disability Scholarship Awards

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. is pleased to offer annual scholarships to assist students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence at accredited schools in the United States.

The scholarships listed below are to be used exclusively for college and university tuition and related expenses:

We do not accept fax or e-mail applications. All required items should be mailed together in one package.

If selected as a scholarship winner, a check will be made payable to the recipient's institution to cover school-related expenses. He or she is expected to submit receipts in accordance with IRS regulations.

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Disability Scholarship Program

The Disability Scholarship was established in 2014 as part of the law firm's commitment to helping students with disabilities or injuries who are in need of financial assistance for education purposes.

The scholarship is available to students of any age, with any type of disability, including but not limited to physical disabilities, medical conditions, mental or psychiatric conditions, speech and language, learning disabilities, behavioral conditions, and all other conditions.

The scholarship will award $1,000.00 to one student selected by our scholarship selection committee.

Disability Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Recipient is a U.S. citizen enrolled at an accredited college or university within the United States
  • Has a disability diagnosis from any person qualified to make a diagnosis
  • Completed at least one semester of classes at an accredited college or university.

Disability Scholarship Applications Requirements

In order to apply for the Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. 2017 Disability Scholarship Program an applicant must submit the following items on or before April 1, 2017:

  • A completed scholarship application form. Click here to download the 2017 Disability Scholarship application.
  • A one-page typed essay describing how you overcame adversity caused by your disability and what you learned from that experience.
  • An official or unofficial transcript from an accredited college or university that includes your most recent semester
  • Diagnosis documentation of disability from a person qualified to make a diagnosis.

2016 Disability Scholarship Winner: Ellie Tjelmeland, University of Southern Indiana

Ellie TjelmelandBorn deaf, Tjelmeland was fitted for cochlear implants at 18 months old – becoming the second-youngest child in the United States, at the time, to receive bilateral hearing devices.

A two-sport student-athlete, Tjelmeland served as captain for her high school’s tennis and cross country team, and was recently named to the Athletic-Academic All-Conference Honor Roll team for tennis, cross country and track. She is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and -- at age 16 -- was officially named a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Law School Diversity Scholarship Program

The Law School Diversity Scholarship Program was created in 2013 as part of the law firm's commitment to helping law students who are in need of financial assistance achieve their academic and professional dreams.

In order to be considered for the scholarship, the student must be a member of an ethnic, racial, or other minority, or demonstrate commitment to issues of diversity within their community.

The scholarship will award $2,000.00 to one student selected by our scholarship selection committee.

Law School Diversity Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Recipient is a member of an ethnic or racial minority or any individual who demonstrates a defined commitment to issues of diversity within their academic career.
  • Recipient is a U.S. citizen currently attending an accredited law school within the United States.
  • Academic achievement as reflected by a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed at least one semester of classes at an accredited law school.

Law School Diversity Scholarship Applications Requirements

In order to apply for the Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. 2017 Law School Diversity Scholarship Program an applicant must submit the following items on or before April 1, 2017:

  • A one page typed essay describing how you have utilized your time promoting ethnic diversity within your community. Alternatively, you may write about how you will use your law degree to promote ethnic diversity in the future.
  • A certified, official copy of law school transcript.

2016 Law School Diversity Scholarship Winner:  Effi Taylor, Villanova University School of Law

Effi TaylorTaylor, who moved to the United States from Ghana to pursue her law degree after high school, is in her second year of law school at Villanova University School of Law. During her undergraduate studies at Denison University, Taylor founded and served as President of the African Students Association.

Taylor currently serves on the Inclusiveness Committee at Villanova Law, where members strategize ways to improve the culture and experience for all students on campus. This past January, she planned and chaired Villanova's Martin Luther King Day celebrations.

The Medical School Diversity Scholarship, established in 2014, is part of the law firm's initiative to recognize medical school students who do outstanding work to promote ethnic diversity in their community.

The funds are to be used toward his or her continued education in medical school. The scholarship is available to all medical school students in the United States who work hard to promote ethnic diversity in their communities.

The scholarship will award $2,000.00 to one student selected by our scholarship selection committee.

2016 Medical Diversity Scholarship Winner: Rachel Lewis, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Rachel LewisLewis, in her second year of medical school at the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, intends to pursue a career as an ophthalmologist with a focus on helping people with inherited eye diseases.

Lewis wishes to help those who suffer from glaucoma, a disease that affects many people, including her mother, in her home country of Ghana. Lewis has already taken steps toward this goal, as she has accepted a position as a research intern in the Ophthalmic Molecular Genetics Section of the National Eye Institute.
