Many cities and counties have ordinances regarding dogs and the responsibilities of dog owners. An owner or keeper of a dog who violates of these ordinances can be held liable for damages in a civil lawsuit to a dog bite victim. The ordinances can be used to prove a case in addition to other Michigan dog bite laws.
In Clawson, there are laws that apply to dog owners. These can be found in the Clawson city Ordinances. Specifically, they are as follows:
Sec. 14-3. Keeping of dangerous animals.
It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain, within the city, any dangerous animal.
(Code 1978, §§ 6-16--6-19)
Sec. 14-4. Disposition of vicious or rabid animals.
The public service aide or other designated authority, or any private individual, may petition the court for an order directing that an animal be destroyed, or otherwise properly disposed of, when any animal, at any time, licensed or unlicensed, has attacked or bitten a person, and shows vicious habits or propensities. The court, in such case, shall cause to be issued a summons and an order to show cause why such animal should not be destroyed or otherwise properly disposed of as a vicious animal. The order to show cause shall specify a date for hearing within five days following its issuance. Upon hearing, if the court shall determine that such animal has rabies, or is a vicious animal constituting a danger to public health and safety, the court may order the animal to be properly disposed of.
(Code 1978, § 6-12(b))
Sec. 14-6. Running at large.
No owner or keeper of any dog, cat or other animal shall permit such animal to run at large within the city at any time.
(Code 1978, § 6-7)
