Our Michigan nursing home attorneys are reporting a recent story about a Kalamazoo nursing home that is currently under fire after a federal investigation of the facilities found some major concerns, including patient abuse. The Borgess Gardens nursing home was recently added to the Special Focus Facilities list. This list contains some of the worst nursing homes in the country and is compiled by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. The nursing homes on the list have shown a history of severe issues and violations.
The investigation revealed that in December 2010, the staff at Borgess Gardens used unnecessary force while pulling apart a patient’s legs during a catheterization procedure that resulted in bruises and muscle and ligament injuries on the patient.
In fact, a federal inspection gave Borgess Gardens a rating of 4 (4 being the worst) in properly caring for residents who need special care, in keeping residents safe from medication errors, and in protecting residents from abuse.
Following the investigation, Borgess has changed leadership and fired three employees, one of them being a nurse.
