The Oakland County region of Southeast Michigan region was witness to 37,781 incidents of Traffic Crashes in the year 2007. This made it second to only Wayne. Out of the 324,174 traffic crashes recorded in the state of Michigan, the southeast region accounted for 140,115 traffic crashes (figure 2 of the report). The traffic crash rate was at 277 and ranked below only Macomb County and Wayne County in the state.
Although there was a dip in the injury traffic cases in the region with the 2007 figures at 7521, down from 7614 in 2006, it still was amongst the highest in the state. The injury traffic crash rate (Injury crashes per 100 Million VMT) was at 55. In 2006 the figure stood at 55, and thus it remained almost the same over the year. These traffic crashes was high keeping in view the recorded Million VMT figure of 13651 in 2006.
Age of Accident Victims
The average age of the drivers who were involved in auto accidents in the State of Michigan were 35.1 years and over 23.4% of the fatal accidents in the state were involving persons in the age group 16 to 24. The young drivers in the Oakland County accounted for 36.7% of the accidents (refer fig 42 of the report). This was in line with the other regions in the state.
