I read a tragic story about a
swimming pool drowning at a Madison Heights Motel. Witnesses say that the six year old girl drowned at the Knights Inn motel swimming pool. Apparently, the girl was not supervised by a parent despite a sign posted at the pool. The pool closed at 8:00 p.m. and the girl was discovered in the pool at 8:15 p.m. Police are still investigating the incident.
I have handled several motel swimming pool drowning cases and these are terrible tragedies. In one suit, two young men drowned in a motel swimming pool in Atlanta, Georgia. In that case, numerous defects existed at the pool and the required safety equipment was not present at pool side, including a safety hook and emergency phone. The pool was also not clean and it was difficult for others to see the boys below the surface of the water. The motel paid a settlement of $1.7 million dollars in a Michigan Wrongful Death Suit.

I read a terrible news story about a 15 year old boy who died the other night after Bay City police used a
taser device on him.
Taser devices are used as an electroshock weapon to shock targeted subjects, but they have been the subject of controversy for many years. There are number of serious Taser reported injuries every year in the United States.
Because police authorities are allowed to use Taser devices, the question becomes was it really necessary in this instance and was used it to such a great extent to cause injuries, or in this case the death of a boy. Police officers must be mindful of the significant dangers posed by this device and it should be a last resort in only the most dangerous circumstances.
No one would argue with the need of a police officer to protect himself from harm, but too often Tasers are used as a weapon instead of a protective device.
In this case, the boy's family may have a
Michigan Wrongful Death Case against the police officer and the Bay City Police Department. To win this type of case, it would have to be established that the officer used "
excessive force" with the Taser or committed an
assault and battery on the boy. The investigation is still continuing and the most important information will probably come from eyewitnesses, rather than from the police accounts themselves.
It is essential that the family start their own investigation immediately, rather than wait on the police to do it for them.
