Pulmonary Embolism Lawsuit Filed Against Urgent Care For Wrongful Death

Comments (0)

Michigan wrongful death lawsuit filedOur Michigan medical malpractice lawyers recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Genesee County Urgent Care facility and a family practice physician.  The suit alleges that the physician was negligent for failing to recognize the signs and symptoms of a patient suffering from a pulmonary embolism. The patient died due to the failure to diagnose and treat this condition.

A pulmonary embolism may be caused by blood clots in the veins, especially veins in the legs, hips or pelvis. It usually manifests itself as leg pain and/or leg swelling when the clot is in the leg.  Once the clot has been allowed to travel to the lung, patients commonly complain of chest pain, dizziness and/or shortness of breath. If the clot is not diagnosed and treated, typically with blood thinners and/or surgery, it can block one of the main pulmonary arteries causing an arrest and death.

We represent the family of a 55 year old woman who went to the urgent care facility with shortness of breath.  She was discharged from the Urgent Care facility without any blood tests or imaging studies, like a chest x-ray, being performed to determine if she was suffering from a pulmonary embolism.  As a result of this negligence, her pulmonary embolism was not diagnosed and she did not receive the necessary medical and surgical care she needed and died at home just a few days later.

The medical malpractice lawsuit seeks all damages allowed under the Michigan Wrongful Death Statute.  These include her pain and suffering until her death and compensation for the loss of society and companionship suffered by her surviving family members.  The suit also seeks medical expenses, lost wages, and funeral and burial expenses. No trial date has been set by the court.
