Our
Michigan nursing home abuse lawyers are reporting a recent story in the Detroit Free Press, “Trust and Neglect” about Lakeland Center, a Southfield, Michigan nursing home, where four deaths were under inspection by state investigators. Two of the deaths were linked to a lack of staffing and faulted Lakeland for serious mistakes in the days before the two other deaths.
One death, James Culbert, who was residing at the Lakeland Center, due to previous injuries in an ATV accident, died after staff failed to follow a doctor’s order to return Culbert to his ventilator. He had been taken off the ventilator earlier that day but reports show that for 15 hours, no one tracked Cublert’s wean data, which shows how a patient is doing without a ventilator, and he died not long after he hit his call button to say he couldn’t’ breathe.
A second death, very similar to Culbert’s was a patient, who had gone to the Lakeland Center for rehab chest and head injuries and to receive care for a tracheotomy. Like Culbert, she was also been weaned from her ventilator and staff failed to record the wean data.
In the other two deaths, two patients, one suffering from a brain aneurism and one who was a car accident victim died after receiving too much or not enough medication or prescribed oxygen.
I am very sorry to hear about these tragic stories and my condolences go out to the family of the deceased victims.
