Our Michigan medical malpractice lawyer recently settled a lawsuit arising from bariatric surgery. The patient underwent gastric bypass surgery for weight loss and was admitted to the hospital for post-operative recovery. During her post-operative admission, she showed signs and symptoms of a gastric leak. These symptoms included tachycardia, a high white blood count, and continuing abdominal pain.
The patient remained admitted to the hospital for three days but was released home on a Friday in the late afternoon. She returned to her home and became significantly septic. She was rushed back to a local emergency department and then transported back to the original hospital. She underwent and emergency open procedure.
After that surgery, she remained hospitalized for several months in the intensive care unit. During that stay, she had a very difficult course and developed ischemic optic neuropathy, a condition that caused her to lose her vision. She is still legally blind today and had to retire from her job.
A medical malpractice lawsuit was filed against the surgeon for her injuries. The case settled for a confidential amount prior to the trial. All information regarding the case is confidential.
